White-throated Kingfisher (Halcyon smymensis)

White-throated Kingfisher
Halcyon smymensis also known as white-throated kingfisher or white-breasted kingfisher belonging to family Alcedinidae. It has a sharp orangish-red bill, bright blue back and chestnut head. An average Halcyon lengths about 20cms and weighs about 73.25gms. Their population is increasing and have "least concern" conservation status. White-throated kingfishers are commonly found near paddy fields, lakes, ponds, swamps, marshes and other water bodies. White-breasted kingfishers feed on insects, small fishes, lizards, amphibians etc. Sexes are alike and breeding occurs from January to August. However, mating is largely seen April-July, offsprings are given parental care for about 20-22days. An average bird lifespan is about 5-6 years.
